Lionel Messi is looking at free agency for the second time in three summers, as his contract with Paris Saint-Germain trickles down. The Argentine World Cup-winner will turn 36 in the summer, and there is little certainty on his next step at this stage.
Fabrizio Romano has confirmed as much to Caught Offside. In his exclusive Substack column, the Italian transfer guru revealed that Messi’s situation continues in stasis.
“No news on Lionel Messi at this stage. We know he speaks to Xavi frequently, Xavi wants him back, Leo loves Barca… nothing new.”
He did however highlight the state of play, which in Messi’s case is a waiting game for something to change.
“The crucial step is when Barcelona will be able to make an official bid to Lionel as Financial Fair Play makes things slow now.”
“PSG made their bid to Leo in February, nothing has changed about that.”
Perhaps the key detail is how long Messi is willing to wait. While he can negotiate now, with any side, Barcelona might not be in a position to make him an offer until July, if at all. Whether PSG or Messi are willing to wait that long for such a crucial piece of news remains to be seen.
