Man United fans stage protest against the Glazer family before game against Aston Villa

  • There had been suggestions the Glazers were not willing to fully sell the club
  • Fans marched before the game as they chanted for the owners to leave
  • The deadline for the final round of bidding for the club passed on Friday

Manchester United fans have staged a protest before the side’s game with Aston Villa.

The latest stand from Red Devils supporters comes just days after the third and final round of bidding for the club concluded, with Sir Jim Ratcliffe leading the race ahead of a Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad al-Thani.

United fans displayed banners outside Old Trafford before the game, with several seen marching with flares in protest against the Glazer family.

While one banner read: ‘Full sale only,’ another was seen reading: ‘Fight greed, Fight Glazers, Fight for United.’

Another read: ‘Love United, hate Glazer,’ while several fans were seen wearing shirts voicing their distaste for the club owners.

Mail Sport understands that Ratcliffe’s firm Ineos have made an offer that would see United priced at more than £5bn.

Ratcliffe wants to buy either 69 per cent of the Premier League giants or slightly more than 50% should Glazer brothers Joel and Avram wish to stay in what would be a controversial move, reported by the Daily Mail last week.

The fans made their demands clear on Sunday as they chanted against the Glazers, who bought United in 2005.

On Friday, those close to Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad al-Thani said his offer had broken the £5bn barrier with a pledge of substantial additional funding. However, those with knowledge of the process, which is being run by US merchant bank Raine Group, say that is not the case and that the Ineos offer actually values the club higher.

United fans have regularly made their voices heard at games this season, chanting against the owners during games and demanding they leave.

On Sunday, the protest started a few miles from Old Trafford and approached the East Stand at around one o’clock.

A decision is nearing on who will be in charge going forwards, but Ratcliffe is said to be confident his bid will be accepted.

On the field, United were looking to bounce back from their 2-2 draw against Tottenham when they took on Unai Emery’s high-flying side.
