A massive elephant that was fatally wounded in a Kn park by a single poacher’s toxic arrow has miraculously recovered. Wide Satao, an enormous elephant, was shot by an arrow in Kenya’s Tsavo East national park, and doctors had to act quickly to save it. If left untreated, the poison would have killed him in 48 hours.
Wide Satao is a “big tusker,” a name for elephants with over 40-year-old tusks that are ʜᴜɴᴛed for their priceless ivory. Victoria Peckett and Philip Ladmore, a British photography couple, shot the stunning images. Wide Sato received a massive dosage of antibiotic medication after being administered a dart-induced sedation and having his wound cleansed.
Mr. Ladmore said that as they approached Wide Satao, they noticed that he had been shot by a poacher’s poisoned arrows in his side. To move him, they had to hold off until the next day and take a plane to relocate him. Then they called the vet.
They were ᴄʟᴏsᴇ enough to see him clearing the dirt and scrubbing the ground. Then they administered the medications to wake him up. He was straining to stand up when they arrived, but he soon left his group of male elephants.
A 2014 Colorado State University study found that between 2011 and 2014, almost 100,000 elephants were slaughtered for their ivory.The demand from Asia, especially Cʜɪɴᴀ, is what drives the illegal ivory trade. Ivory can be sold for up to $3,000 per kilogram. Since it weighs so much, ivory from elephants like Wide Sataos is highly prized. Big tuskers are often older male elephants with tusk weights of 100 pounds or more And since they are so valuable, they are becoming less and less in number.
