Tottenham fans should not give manager Antonio Conte a free pass with his defeatist rhetoric branded ‘garbage’.
That’s according to former Arsenal player Adrian Clarke, who feels the Italian is as much to blame as chairman Daniel Levy for the club’s current predicament.
Conte got off scot-free as Tottenham supporters round on other targets
An insipid showing in a 2-0 loss to Aston Villa saw Spurs lack creativity and forward thrust, but supporters turned on the club’s owners and players rather than the manager.
Cries of ‘Daniel Levy, get out of our club’ rang out at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, while right wing-back Emerson Royal was booed onto the pitch as Spurs’ terrible form, which sees them slip out of the top four, continued.
But Clarke believes fans, who are mostly still behind the former Chelsea and Juventus boss, should be giving criticism to the Italian too given situation they find themselves in.
He told talkSPORT: “Why is Antonio Conte getting a free pass right now? That’s the question I’d ask. All the Spurs fans are hammering Daniel Levy and the board and whatnot but he’s got to look at himself tactically.
“Seven games in a row they have conceded at least two goals in the Premier League – that is shocking.
“You have to say that the organisation of the team has not been as good as it should have been.
Levy had to take the abuse as Spurs were beaten by Aston Villa
“Hugo Lloris is consistently making mistakes but [Conte] hasn’t really made any decisions on [his future.]
“Creatively they have got issues. The squad has lacked a creative player for years, probably since Christian Eriksen left the club.
“It’s all been very reliant on Kane and Son, and more recently Kulusevski. With Kulusevski missing from the last game they just had nothing, really, up their sleeves.
“There are problems for Spurs. I don’t think they are good enough without the ball to get into the top four at the moment.
An error-prone Lloris needs to be upgraded on
“Conte is a smart manager, he’s got a great CV but he’s going to have to show all these coaching credentials between now and the end of the season to get them into the top four.
“All this talk of Tottenham needing a miracle is garbage, isn’t it? There squad is capable of top-four. That is what they achieved last season.
“They are underperforming and Conte should hold his hands up and say that’s the case, ‘we are underperforming, including myself’.”
