Solomzi Radebe, a field guide at Pilanesberg, caught this incredible moment on camera. He said that as they were taking in the sighting, he noticed a hippo bull emerge from the water and go slowly in the direction of the ᴋɪʟʟ. He had the impression that he was simply interested in what was happening and that he might try to scare the lions away.
Two females then followed the slow-moving male hippo as he approached the lions. He was intimidating the pride by opening his mouth widely. The hippo did not worry the male lions much, but the lionesses and cubs were uneasy in his presence and kept their distance from this enormous animal.
The male lions maintained their position but Radebe had no idea what would happen. They were obviously reluctant to leave the carcass because they were starving. Everyone is aware that hippos primarily consume ɢʀᴀss, yet Radebe had observed them gnawing on a waterbuck carcass in the past.
When this hippo entered the pride’s meal, Rabede hardly believed what he was seeing. He didn’t flinch and didn’t seem in the least bit intimidated by them. In fact, it appeared as though they were all enjoying a delicious lunch while sharing a peace pipe. Rabede left the sighting after the hippo returned to the water since it was full and he was pleased with himself for showing those lions who was in charge.
