Manchester United great Gary Neville slams ‘strange’ Ronaldo rule with Casemiro poin

Man United are reportedly bringing in a cap for wages in what has been dubbed the ‘Ronaldo rule’.

Gary Neville has labelled Manchester United’s reported plan to cap wages at the club to £200,000 per week as ‘strange’, as he pointed to Casemiro’s salary as a potential issue with the rule.

Recent reports have hinted that United are planning to introduce a so-called ‘Ronaldo rule’ in a bid to stop any members of the squad becoming jealous of their teammates’ wages. The rule would see all salaries limited at £200k per week, regardless of seniority.

But former United captain Neville is far from convinced with the idea. He took to social media to share his concerns over the proposal and question the merits behind its introduction.

Taking to Twitter, Neville wrote: “Not sure why any radical new policy is being introduced IF new owners are imminent.” And after a fan suggested that the rule should be brought in regardless of new ownership, Neville replied: “Should it? [Manchester] City had it until [Erling] Haaland and others came in!”

“Capping wages is a radical policy,” he added. “[It] Rules out [Declan] Rice, [Jude] Bellingham and others in that bracket. Any new owners would probably want to enter the running for these types and probably [Kylian] Mbappe as well. 200k won’t get you Rice or Bellingham let alone Mbappe!”

Another supporter then implied that the Reds could find themselves losing out on transfers to the likes of Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid. Neville agreed with the sentiment and then questioned how such a rule could be introduced with members of the squad – such as Casemiro – earning more than the £200k per week cap.

He added: “Exactly! Seems a strange policy when you have Casemiro, others on 350/400k for 4 more years in the dressing room!”
