Chelsea would be silly not to sign Borussia Monchengladbach striker Marcus Thuram, says the Daily Express’ Ryan Taylor.
The 25-year-old forward is one name the Blues are looking at right now as Graham Potter tries to improve his underperforming side.
Chelsea transfer news – Marcus Thuram
Journalist Simon Phillips recently told GiveMeSport that Chelsea have stepped up their interest in Thuram.
The Frenchman may be attainable this month given his contract situation. His existing deal expires at the end of the season, meaning Gladbach could be forced to sell him in this transfer window.
If Gladbach decide to, clubs could be looking at £10m to land him, claims FootballTransfers’ Jacque Talbot. Thuram has been on fire for the German outfit this term, scoring 10 goals in his first 15 Bundesliga outings, as per Transfermarkt.
According to The Athletic, Joao Felix is another attacker Chelsea could bring in after reaching an agreement with Atletico Madrid over a loan deal.
What has Ryan Taylor said about Marcus Thuram?
Taylor thinks Chelsea and Potter should be all over Thuram.
Speaking to GMS, the Daily Express journalist said: “I’m surprised United aren’t looking at this one, maybe even Arsenal, because he ticks that box. But, at the same time, I think Chelsea probably would be silly not to go for it at the moment given their depleted squad.”
Who has Marcus Thuram been compared to?
Thuram has actually been compared to Arsenal legend Thierry Henry, which is probably the highest praise a French attacker can receive.
When asked which player in football reminds him of Henry a couple of years ago, another Arsenal icon in Arsene Wenger said (via the Bundesliga’s official website): “Actually, there’s a player in the Bundesliga that reminds me of him. Marcus Thuram from Monchengladbach. A very talented player.”
If his form this season is anything to go by, then Thuram could certainly be a good addition to Chelsea’s squad.
However, the France international’s arrival alone would probably not be enough to kick-start the Blues’ campaign. There are a lot of problems at Stamford Bridge right now, from injuries to Potter already coming under pressure amid this terrible slump his side are in.
Improving their attack with the likes of Thuram and Felix, though, is at least a start. Simply put, it has not been good enough this term, with Potter’s men registering just 20 times in 17 Premier League games.
Thuram could help them with that and things could start to slightly improve if he does. But again, more needs to change at Chelsea if they are to salvage something from this campaign.
