Better Call Saul’s Giancarlo Esposito is still holding out hope to lead the X-Men in the MCU with his next big role.

Until the X-Men are cast upon their reboot in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Giancarlo Esposito will be trying to land the role of Charles Xavier, aka Professor X. Previously portrayed by actors like Patrick Stewart and James McAvoy, the leader of the X-Men will most likely be reimagined with a new actor in the role when the mutant group eventually arrives in the MCU. In the past, Esposito has said he’s had talks with Marvel about potentially joining one of their projects and that he’s hoping to play Professor X above all others.

In a new interview with The Tonight Show, Esposito again addressed the possibility of joining the MCU. He mentions how there are a few different characters that fans constantly ask him about potentially playing, and among them is Professor X. That’s the one he would be most interested in, as after playing such villainous characters in shows like Better Call Saul, The Mandalorian, and The Boys, Esposito wants to play someone who’s more of a good guy for a change. As he tells Jimmy Fallon:

“I love what Marvel does. I love that the fans can see me in this universe, and are proposing not only one character, possibly Magneto, possibly (Mr.) Freeze, and the biggest ask is Charles Xavier. But, look, I want to play a good guy! And Charles is smart, he’s good. But, I feel as if there may be some mileage with me and Marvel. I know I love what they do. I know I love creativity. So, who know what could happen. Keep putting it out there.”

Esposito has previously campaigned for the role, openly speaking about how much he wants to play Charles Xavier. In a separate interview with ComicBook.com, he also teased what he’d bring to that role with his take on the fan favorite character.

“I’d play that character with force, grace, and a calm. Someone who controls the chaos, but someone who also has the ability to uplift and inspire.”

What’s Next for Giancarlo Esposito?

Time is going to have to tell who Esposito might play when he arrives in the MCU, but let’s hope he gets there one day, whether as Professor X or any other character. For now, fans can see him in the new Netflix series Kaleidoscope, which has the actor playing another morally gray character as the mastermind behind an ultimate heist that takes 25 years to carry out. The limited series is now streaming on Netflix.
