One of my life’s aims is to swim in as many lakes, rivers, pools and oceans as I possibly can, to use my liberty and swimming skills as freely as I can. I love the feeling of being in a large, fresh body of water, its soft immersive, vast or deep buoyancy. I’ve swum in a freshwater lagoon near Acapulco in Mexico, with the guide reassuring us there were no crocodiles in the water that day. I’ve swum in a busy London indoor pool noisy with swimmers thrashing about and in Australia’s only women’s pool. I’ve swum in the Weisser…

Sometimes synergy in Marvel Comics with the MCU can indicate what Marvel Studios might intend to do with some characters. One example was Monica Rambeau’s superhero name suddenly changing back to Photon in the comics. This is a change that was obviously made in anticipation of Monica having that alias in The Marvels as opposed to Spectrum. It certainly makes sense with Photon having been Maria Rambeau’s callsign as a pilot, so Monica using it to honor her mother would make sense. However, not everyone got the message, with a new children’s book giving Monica a different superhero alias. Monica Rambeau’s Other Superhero Name A new addition to Marvel’s licensed…

If there’s one thing you don’t want to find in a grave you just opened, it’s a strange and ominous, message written in what appears to be blood, declaring that anybody who opens the grave will be cursed. Excavating the UNESCO World Heritage Site Beit She’arim Necropolis, archaeologists found a 1,800-year-old grave marker for a Jewish convert named Jacob – and he was not happy about it. “Iokobos [Jacob] the proselyte swears upon himself that any who open this grave will be…

It is now widely accepted that birds are descended from dinosaurs. It is also understood that this transition encompasses some of the most dramatic transformations morphologically, functionally, and ecologically, thus eventually giving rise to the characteristic bird body plan. However, paleontologists still struggle to understand how this fantastic evolutionary event occurred. Now, a new, complete 120-million-year-old fossil bird from China further complicates this issue by exhibiting a dinosaur-like skull articulated with a bird-like body. In addition, the fossil specimen, named Cratonavis zhui, preserves a surprisingly elongate scapula and first metatarsal, making it stand out from all other birds including fossil…

Much to the dismay of some, Marvel’s super-powered franchise is more inclusive than it ever has been. The MCU has even been awarded for its on-screen representation, as it introduces heroes of diverse backgrounds, gender identities, and sexual orientations. However, it seems as though the studio may have nixed one recent opportunity for an on-screen first that was…
